La Vergne Mayor Dennis Waldron recently presented Mrs. Jane Vailes with the La Vergne Centenarian Award in honor of her 101st birthday last month.
Mrs. Vailes was born in 1915 and is the oldest living graduate in her high school class. During World War II, she was a real-life "Rosie the Riveter," working on B-24 wing spars. Later, she would become a writer, and she would have her senior news column published for 25 years.
"I may be 101, but I feel like 85. Age hasn't slowed me down," she said.
Mrs. Vailes was honored with a surprise party hosted by the La Vergne Senior Center.
